The classroom challenge is now closed. However, you can run your own classroom challenge using these materials. Happy learning!
This free, week-long program is the ultimate way to boost student engagement and make learning a blast! What’s the challenge? See how many activities students can complete in the Khan Academy Kids app from April 3rd-7th! Kids can visualize their progress with this printable tracker, and then celebrate by decorating a certificate at the end of the week.
✏️ Let’s get into the details!
What is the classroom challenge? A free, fun program to engage kids in independent learning
Who can participate? Preschool through 2nd grade classrooms
Why should I join? It’s a fun way to boost student engagement and make independent learning a blast! Plus, there are prizes involved. We’ll send out printable certificates for your students at the end of the challenge, and you’ll get to enter a giveaway to win a class set of Khan Kids t-shirts and crayon packs from Crayola.
I’m in! How does it work? Print out copies of this tracker—one for each student. Then, make sure students have the Khan Academy Kids app downloaded on their tablets or Chromebooks. As students use Khan Kids during the week, invite them to check off the activities they complete on their tracker. Eager students might need more spaces! You can pile on multiple stickers in each box, or show them how to draw a simple shape like a circle or a smiley face.
When is it? Monday, April 3rd through Friday, April 7th
Khan Academy Kids is a free educational app for kids in preschool-2nd grade, brought to you by the educational nonprofit Khan Academy. It offers hundreds of fun, standards-aligned math and ELA lessons that you can assign to students. To participate in the challenge, please download the app and create an account. Then, make sure the app is available on student devices. Questions? Email us at khankids@khanacademy.org.
⭐️ Let’s get started!
1. Print out the classroom challenge tracker and certificate. You can right click the images below, save, and print. Or you can download the PDFs here. You’ll need one tracker and one certificate for each student.
2. Make sure the Khan Academy Kids app is downloaded on student devices. If you haven’t already created an account, you can follow these steps. Khan Academy Kids is a mobile app that can be downloaded for free from the Apple, Google Play, or Amazon app store. It works on most smartphones, tablets, and Chromebooks. For help downloading the app or getting your account set up, get in touch with your school’s IT administrator or reach out to our Help Desk at khankids@khanacademy.org.
✨ Make it your own!
The classroom challenge is designed to be flexible so you can customize it to work with your class. Here are some ideas to get you started:
💡 Assign lessons for students to focus on when they go into the app. Try assigning 3 lessons for each day of the challenge. Students can work on these while you’re leading small groups, or doing free choice tech time. Click here to see how you can find lessons that match what you’re teaching in class and assign them to students.
💡 Let students engage in free play. They can explore the Library or get personalized learning recommendations on their Learning Path. Each time they finish an activity, they can fill in a box on the tracker.
💡 Read three books a day in the Khan Kids Library. Point students toward the Books tab in the Library. They can pick three books to read and mark off all three boxes on their tracker. There are so many books to choose from: nonfiction books about dinosaurs, cute animal adventures, and even stories with bite-size SEL lessons! All books in the Khan Academy Kids app have a “Read to Me” mode where the app will read aloud while the text highlights. Kids who are already reading can select “Read by Myself” mode.
We recognize that part of making the challenge your own may mean that joining us from April 3rd-7th won’t work for your school schedule. That’s okay! We’ll keep the printable materials for the challenge available year-round. Pick a week that works for you and take your students along on a fun learning adventure! Note: While the classroom challenge materials will be available year-round, the giveaway is only for teachers who participate in the challenge from April 3rd-April 7th.
🎁 Win prizes!
All participating classrooms can enter our classroom challenge giveaway for a chance to win a classroom set of Khan Kids t-shirts and crayon packs from Crayola. You can enter the giveaway by filling out this form, which will start taking responses on Friday, April 7th. The form will be open for a week and close on April 14th. Please note that the giveaway is only open to U.S. residents age 18 or older. See full terms and conditions here.
The form will ask you to submit a photo that shows your participation. This is intentionally open-ended. There are no firm requirements! You can take a cute photo of all your students holding up their trackers or certificates like the one below, or you can simply snap a photo of one of your student’s trackers with a few boxes filled in. That’s all it takes!
Even if you don’t win the giveaway, we’ve made sure that there’s a little something for everyone. Print out these printable certificates for kids to color at the end of the challenge. They’ll love showing off their hard work to their family and friends!
