Did you know the Khan Academy Kids app has a suite of creative tools to encourage open-ended learning and exploration? Kids can draw, fill in coloring pages, record their voice, make stickers move, and more.
To access these creative tools, go to the Khan Academy Kids library and then select the Create tab 🖍️.
You'll see fun coloring pages featuring animals, vehicles, characters from the Khan Kids app, and more. You'll also see backgrounds that kids can use as a starting point for their creative masterpiece.
Select a coloring page or background, and then tap the blue pencil in the top right corner to access all the creative tools. Tapping the blue pencil will make two panels appear: one on the right side, with icons for stickers, colored pencils, and crayons; and one on the top, with icons for undoing the last action, recording your voice, and listening to your recording.
You can see these options in the image above. Here's a little bit more detail about what each icon allows you to do:
- Bear: When you tap the bear icon on the right side, the bottom of the screen turns into a menu of stickers that kids can drag onto the screen.
- Colored pencil: The menu turns into colored pencils to allow for more detailed drawing.
- Crayon: The menu goes back to crayons, including a fun rainbow crayon that makes colorful streaks!
- Arrow: Press this button to undo your last action.
- Microphone: Press this button to record your voice. While recording your voice, you can also move stickers around to make an animated creation. When you're done recording, press the square "stop" button.
- Play button: Select the play button to watch what you recorded.
Kids use the Create tab to make a number story. This is a common mathematics exercise in Kinder-1st grade classrooms. Five cats meet four bats in a spooky forest. How many animals are there altogether? Count all the animals to find out, and pair it with an equation for extra practice. |
Kids use the Create tab to retell a story that they just read with their class, or with their parent at home. They use stickers to select the main characters: three pigs and a big, bad wolf. Kids record their voice and move the stickers around to tell the story in their own words. |
When kids are done with their creation, tap the green checkmark in the bottom right corner. Their work will be saved at the very bottom of the Create tab in the Gallery section. You can even help them export their creation to the camera roll to share with family and friends! The GIPHY below will show you how, or you can learn more here.
