Our Commitment to Inclusivity
Khan Academy Kids aims to reach as many children as possible. Our goal is to help ensure that learners with varying abilities and needs are able to access our app. With that in mind, we’ve designed our activities and lessons to be easily differentiated and embedded in a platform that limits distractions while integrating supportive features that make the overall experience more accessible. Here are some of the highlights:
Scaffolded learning:
- Teachers can assign activities to individual students to personalize practice
- Each skill includes practice at different levels to provide more opportunities for scaffolding
- Skills can be practiced multiple times to support both short and long-term memory
- Practice opportunities are presented in multiple modalities to appeal to different senses and learning styles (i.e. auditory, visual, and kinesthetic)
Designed for focus:
- Predictable and simple navigation keeps learners on track
- Practice is presented in manageable chunks, with creative and physical breaks built-in
- Background music can be turned off in lessons, allowing for more auditory focus
- Parents and teachers can turn off the Create and Video tabs in the library to help emphasize specific activities
- Teachers can turn on "assignments first" to keep kids focused on the highest priority practice
- Designed to avoid excessive gamification and busy visual displays
- Presented in bite-sized, modular lessons designed to engage young learners
Supportive features:
- Text is written at a grade-appropriate level, using a visually-friendly font
- Text can be read aloud to learners, with words being highlighted as they are read—making it easier to focus and follow along.
- Audio prompts are embedded in activities and spaced apart to keep learners engaged.
- Our narrator, Kodi Bear, is in the corner of the screen to reinforce instructions, offer additional support, and give encouragement to keep learners on track.
- Device-specific accessibility features such as color inverters work in conjunction with our app.
- The Khan Academy Kids app is available on a wide range of tablets, mobile devices, and Chromebooks.
