Monday: Ocean animals
Watch: Ocean Life Circle Time
Let's start Animal Adventures week with an underwater journey! Join the Khan Kids crew to learn about ocean life. The episode starts with a story about the characters Beluga and Narwhal. Then, read a book about humpback whales and see pictures of whales in real life!
🍿 Video Tip: Here is an Animal Adventures playlist with all of the videos this week for quick reference.
Read: Books about sea animals
Open the Khan Kids Library to see how many books you can find about ocean animals. We love Great White Sharks by Bellwether Media. Did you know they are the biggest predatory fish on Earth? Learn about their size, structure, and serrated teeth! Find it in the Books section of the Khan Kids Library which features Camp Khan Kids summer reading during July. Children who are just beginning to read can choose Read to Me, and readers who would like to practice reading independently can try Read by Myself.
Write: Favorite ocean animals
Color this pair of great white sharks from the printable packet or the Create tab of the Khan Kids Library. Then, use the Writing Page to make a list of ocean animals. How many sea animals can your children list? Let’s see who can spell words like octopus, whale, starfish, and stingray.
Learn: Least to greatest
Go to the Math section of the Khan Kids app to compare numbers from least to greatest. Little learners can start by ordering numbers; older learners can compare numbers using greater than and less than symbols. Once kids have practiced in the app, cut out numbers and put them in order using the Least to Greatest worksheet in our printable packet.
Play: Recycle plastic cups into joyful jellyfish
Collect recycled snack cups to turn them into jellyfish. We love the craft we found on the Room to Grow YouTube channel or this one from Frolicking Fox Club. To make them, turn the cup upside down, decorate it to make a face, and tape or glue strips of paper or ribbon for tentacles.
🪼 Note: When we play at Camp Khan Kids, we can be as flexible or creative as necessary. Adjust this craft with the materials you have around the house (for example, strips of bubble wrap would be great for tentacles).
Once your jellyfish are made, we'd love to see the creations. Tag us on social media with the hashtag #campkhankids or submit them to be included in our art show.
Tuesday: Reptiles and amphibians
Watch: Tree Frog Circle Time
Today, we’re learning about reptiles and amphibians of the animal kingdom. Start with Circle Time where kids can sing along to “5 Little Speckled Frogs." Then, learn fun facts about frogs in the Tree Frog book by Bellwether Media.
Read: Books about reptiles and amphibians
Find a selection of books about reptiles and amphibians in the Books tab of the Khan Kids Library. Learn how amphibians live on land and in water and have smooth moist skin. Compare these creatures with reptiles, which have dry scaly skin. See how many of these books kids can find: Frogs, Salamanders, Alligators, Crocodiles, Snakes, Turtles, Chameleons, and Komodo Dragons. Which book is your child's favorite?
Write: Color a salamander
Color the salamander in the printable packet or in the Create tab of the Khan Kids app. Encourage children to name and decorate their salamander friends. We'd love to see all of these colorful amphibians. Share these savvy, stylish salamanders on social media and tag us with #campkhankids.
Learn: Flexible thinking
Snakes are reptiles that slither, twist, and turn. Let kids practice similar flexibility with their brains. As we flex our brains, our mindsets grow. Head to the Logic+ section of the Khan Kids app for lessons on flexible thinking, following directions, sorting, and rules. Practicing these skills is a great way to build the powers of observation and problem-solving.
Play: Craft the lifecycle of a frog
Ribbit! 🐸 Let's learn about the lifecycle of a frog by crafting it. Watch your frog go through metamorphosis as it changes shape from a tadpole to a froglet.
Use bubble wrap to cut out the eggs. Recycle a cardboard egg container for the frog's body. Add a paper strip for the tadpole tail and froggy legs. Here are two examples from the Backyard Biologists in Nantucket, and Dad Tinkering Time on YouTube.
🐸 We can't wait to see the froggies your kids create! Tag us on social media with the hashtag #campkhankids or submit them to be included in our art show.
Wednesday: Furry friends
Watch: Humane Society Field Trip with Caitie’s Classroom
During Wednesday of Camp Khan Kids, we’re going to focus on the wonderful world of pets. Start with Caitie’s Classroom for a virtual field trip to the Toronto Humane Society. See dogs, cats, and playful kittens. Don’t miss the guinea pigs, turtles, and bunnies too. Learn how the Humane Society helps pets get ready for their adoptive families.
Read: Books about cats and dogs
Have you seen the books about pets in Khan Academy Kids? Find these books in the Khan Kids Library under Playful Pets. Learn fun facts about cats and dogs, such as the Norwegian Forest Cat who first came to North America on Viking ships to hunt mice. Wow! What do kids think about the doggie dachshunds? Too cute!
Write: Describe a dream pet
Use today's coloring page as inspiration to help kids dream up a pet of their own. Design the pet in the Create tab of the Khan Kids app or the printable packet. If kids are using the app, don't forget about the pencil icon to open special features like changing the art tool, adding stickers, or recording a voice for your new pet.
Learn: Capital letters
Pet names, like Fido, Fluffy, or Ferdinand, are all proper nouns. What’s unique about proper nouns? They are capitalized! Show kids the Reading section in the Khan Kids app, and scroll to Early Readers. The lessons in this section feature the Khan Kids characters. Help kids notice how the names of Kodi, Ollo, Sandy, Reya, and Peck are all capitalized because they are proper nouns. Older learners may enjoy the capitalization lessons in the 1st and 2nd-grade learning levels.
Play: Design a stuffed animal pet carrier
Making habitats for pretend pets can be so much fun. If you have some cardboard boxes handy, let kids repurpose them for their pretend pet or stuffed animal. They may need fabric or blankets to line the bottom, a little bowl for food, a mini pet toy, and some markers to put their pet’s name on the box. If it’s a closed-lid box, they may need help making an opening so their pet can go in and out. We love this example from Sophie’s World.

Thursday: Birds
Watch: How to Draw Peck Circle Time
Today we’re taking flight with books and activities about birds. Did you know that Peck from Khan Academy Kids is a hummingbird? Let’s start by learning how to draw our friend Peck with Kim the animator from Khan Academy Kids!
Read: Books about birds
Browse the Khan Kids Library to find books about birds. They will love learning about birds like toucans, parrots, peacocks, ducks, hummingbirds, and owls. What makes birds special? Their wings, their eyesight, their beaks, or something else kids notice while reading? Keep track of these interesting facts, and get ready to go birdwatching!
Write: Start a birdwatching log
After reading books about birds, invite kids to fill in today's coloring page and then head out to look for birds. Bring a log to track this birdwatching experience. Note interesting facts like the type of bird, where it's lurking, and if it's alone or in a flock. Fill out the log with drawings of birds kids see, or the bird kids want to be!
Learn: Math time with Peck
Engage children with focused math time in the Khan Kids app. From the Khan Kids Library, choose the Math tab with Peck. Select the appropriate age level for your child, and choose counting, addition, subtraction, and more. Or, go to the Videos tab, select an age level, and find the videos featuring Peck. These festive introductions to math concepts make learning fun! Continue math practice with our Animal Week Math Counters from the printable packet.
Play: Paint a paper plate peacock
Let's paint one of the world's most beautiful birds—a peacock! Take a blank paper plate and some pieces of rectangular sponge. Dip the sponge in purple, blue, and green paints to decorate the plate. Add a peacock head, eyes, and a beak. Gorgeous! We love these examples from ABCDE Learning and Toddler At Play (which uses a cardboard tube to stand tall.)
Friday: Baby Animals
Watch: Baby Animal Playlist
Read and learn about baby elephants, baby owls, baby horses, baby dogs, and more with the Khan Academy Kids team. Our Baby Animal playlist features storytelling with a blend of fiction and nonfiction stories about the wonder and beauty of our natural world.
Read: Books about baby animals
Head to the Super Cute section in the Khan Kids Library to check out ALL of our baby animal books. Many baby animals share certain characteristics, like playfulness and a close relationship with their mother. Don’t miss Baby Lions - too cute!
Write: Fill in your certificate for completing the week
Time to celebrate! Invite campers to fill out their certificates for completing the week. Find the certificate in the printable packet. During the month of July, you can also find a digital version inside the app that campers can export and save. Consider sharing your certificate with a friend so they can join Camp Khan Kids too. All of our programs are available for free—for anyone, anywhere!
Learn: Flying Eagle Yoga
Spread your wings with Flying Eagle Yoga from Alo Yoga. Start as an egg, and stretch your way to a full-fledged flyer. Kids will love using their arms as wings, practicing for the time when they fly out of the nest. Freedom of movement is one of life's greatest pleasures!
Play: Look for wildlife!
Time for an outdoor adventure! This week’s printable packet contains a wildlife scavenger hunt that kids can find in their neighborhood. How many creatures can they find? Check them off this list, then snap photos for a family slideshow at the end of the day.
