Time to Play: Make a Rainbow Crayon (or Color a Rainbow!) 🌈
One of the most popular features inside the Khan Academy Kids creative gallery is the rainbow coloring tool. How about making a rainbow crayon in real life? Gather old used crayons, and peel and break them up into small pieces. Peeling the wrappers can be tough if the crayons are old, so factor in a little time to prep the crayons. Snapping the crayons in half or in pieces can be an interesting tactile experience for kids. Arrange crayons in a silicone mold or muffin tin. Parents will need to heat the oven and bake the crayons at a low temperature (275˚F) until the colors are melted. Let the crayons cool before popping out the new shapes.
For a simpler activity, focus on pulling out sheets of blank paper and coloring a rainbow with crayons, pencils, or markers. Enhance the rainbow with cotton balls for clouds, or glitter for a touch of sparkle.
