Welcome to Animals & Nature Week at Camp Khan Kids! This week, help your kids make scientific discoveries about creatures and habitats in our natural world. From the largest elephant to the tiniest ladybug, we’ve got animal facts covered! Explore, sort, and study objects from the environment. What mysteries do they tell? Find the answers through imaginary play or a painted nature scene.
See below for the week’s schedule at a glance, along with details about how to access each activity. The daily schedule includes 5 activities per day. Feel free to adapt this schedule and mix and match activities to fit your child's interests and learning level.

MONDAY
Circle Time Video: Amazing Armadillos! 🐾
Today we have two sensational stories to share on Circle Time with Khan Academy Kids. Join Caroline and Sophie as they read books about armadillos. Start with “On A Roll” by Cynthia Platt, and keep reading with the “Armadillos” book by Bellwether Media to see amazing animal images in nature. Khan Kids Book: Just You Wait 🐛
Read the Book “Just You Wait” by Cynthia Platt in the Khan Academy Kids app. Meet four characters (Caterpillar, Skunk, Rabbit, and Mouse) who witness the story of a caterpillar who patiently believed in herself. From the home screen of the app, select the purple book “Library” icon, head to the Books tab, and select “Just You Wait” from the New Stories section. Khan Kids App: Desert Coloring Page 🌵
Use the Create tab in the Khan Kids app for drawing and coloring activities. From the home screen of the app, select the purple book “Library” icon, head to the Create tab, and scroll down to the New Color section. There is a desert scene coloring page for kids to fill in. They can identify plants and animals like cactus, rabbits, and a fox. Try using the pencil icon to open special features like stickers and recording.

Time to Play: Write Your Name with Objects in Nature 🌼
Have you ever spelled your name in the sand, or made a design with rocks? Let’s put those skills to use by guiding kids to use objects in nature to write their names. Pebbles, leaves, sticks, and sand make a great start. Add enhancements with flowers, shells, or feathers. Share your creations with us (#CampKhanKids) - we’d love to see the final product!

Circle Time Video: Baby Dogs & Puppy Fun! 🐶
Welcome to Circle Time with Khan Academy Kids! Today, Caroline and Sophie read the book “Baby Dogs” by Bellwether Media. Learn all about puppies, and how to spell the word d-o-g. Special guest Teacher Sarah introduces her new dog, Zeke. Watch Zeke’s new tricks, and learn about how to take care of pets. Then, meet Sophie’s puppies and see all the fun they have on the farm! It’s time to get moving! Put the device down and follow instructions in the “Physical Development” section of the Khan Academy Kids app. The “Wag Your Tail” activity is a fun way to practice animal dance moves.

Time to Play: Stuffed Animal Friends 🧸
Keep the animal theme going by collecting ALL of the stuffed animals in your household. Big stuffed animals, medium stuffed animals, and little stuffed animals are all welcome. There are plenty of pretend-play games to enjoy with these cuddly buddies. Kids could set up a stuffed animal zoo where they decide how to place the exhibits. Or, they could serve a delicious picnic with name cards and a menu. If children are still in learning mode, they could set up a classroom and create lessons and assignments for their furry friends. Kids make great teachers!

Circle Time Video: Baby Elephants! 🐘
Read two books about elephants during Circle Time with Khan Academy Kids. Caroline and Sophie start with “Baby Elephants” by Bellwether Media and show real-life pictures of elephants in nature. Read the Book “Six Legs” by Cynthia Platt in the Khan Academy Kids app. Talk about insects with Kodi and Reya. Don’t forget to move the stickers in this interactive book! Have you ever wondered about the length or height of an object? Join Sandy as she counts the length of a rope with pawprints to kick off the “measurement” activity in Khan Academy Kids. The Logic+ section of the app’s Library has plenty to discover about patterns, shapes, sizes, and measurements.

Time to Play: Paint a Nature Scene 🖌
Haul out the paints, the paintbrushes, the water jar, and the apron. It’s time to paint! If you don’t have paint or watercolor paint, water and a dry surface will do. Start by painting a tree. Trees are accessible because they have consistent elements like a trunk, branches, and leaves. Explore from there, whether it includes the sky above and the ground below, or details on the tree such as fruit or birds. Look outside, look up, and look around for inspiration.
Activity bonus: For those who’d like to create more, try the “Mud Faces” activity from Tinkergarten. Here, kids can take mud, clay, or playdough, mold it to a tree trunk, and decorate “faces” with objects in nature. Is the face feeling happy, sad, or in between? Talk about emotions while creating your artwork, and it’s a win-win for social-emotional development!

Circle Time Video: How to Plant a Seed 🌱
Welcome to Circle Time with Khan Academy Kids! Today, Caroline and Sophie talk about what can be grown from seeds. Learn the long “e” sound with the words “bean” and “seeds” in the book, “Plant a Seed” by Cynthia Platt. Join special guest Teacher Sarah as she shows us how to start a garden by planting a sunflower seed. Learn how to grow a seed with soil, water, and sunlight. Time to Play: Collect Bugs With A Camera! 📸
Do your kids like to scroll through the camera roll? Help them add to the collection by going on a bug hunt. Can they find a beetle? A butterfly? A line of ants? Snap a photo and build a bug collection of all the incredible insects that live in our environment. Having a hard time finding bugs? Kids can make their own with this polka dot bug craft from Super Simple!

Time to Play: Plant a Terrarium ☘️
Build a tiny plant world! Save an old food jar (spaghetti sauce or salsa will do!) and clean it out. Fill it partially with some dirt or stones. Find small plants to place in the soil of the jar. Items found on a nature walk will come in handy for decoration, such as small rocks or pinecones. What else can you find to add to the terrarium?
