Welcome to Music & Movement Week at Camp Khan Kids! Activate literacy skills with songs and games that get everyone moving. Sing and dance with Caitie from Super Simple Songs on Circle Time. Tune up reading skills with action-packed stories about gymnastics, musical instruments, and monster cars. Write words and sound out letters to build vocabulary. Stretch to the finish line with alphabet yoga and DIY instruments!
See below for the week’s schedule at a glance, along with details about how to access each activity. The daily schedule includes 5 activities per day. Feel free to adapt this schedule and mix and match activities to fit your child's interests and learning level.
MONDAY
Circle Time Video: Head, Shoulders, Knees, & Toes 🎶
Sing "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" with Caitie from Super Simple Songs! Then, join Caroline and Sophie from Khan Academy Kids as they read a book about music called “In Harmony”. Learn words with the “qu” sound like quarter, queen, and quiet. Watch as our hosts play different instruments, and lead children in a game of Name That Tune! Khan Kids Book: Flip, Jump, Roll 🤸♀️
Read the Book “Flip, Jump, Roll” by Cynthia Platt in the Khan Academy Kids app. Practice learning cartwheels with Kodi and Reya! From the home screen of the app, select the purple book “Library” icon, head to the Books tab, and scroll down to the New Early Readers section. Go to: Home screen > Library > Books > New Early Readers > Flip, Jump, Roll.

- Writing and coloring with instruments (all ages): After reading the book “In Harmony” with Sophie and Caroline during Circle Time, color a picture of all the characters playing their instruments together. Practice writing the names of their instruments, too!
Khan Kids App: Reading & Writing 📚
Try reading and writing in Khan Academy Kids! Open the app and select the purple book icon to access the Library. Head to the “Reading” section. Toggle the drop-down menu on the right to align the Library to your child’s age. Kids 2-4 can try copying down words that they see in their everyday environment, and kids 5-7 can sound them out. Listen really closely to hear the first sound in the word! Here are some examples:

Time to Play: Alphabet Yoga 🧘♀️
How many letters can kids spell with their bodies? Start with the capital letter “A” by trying the downward dog pose. Round out one arm and one leg to make a “B”. For “C”, who can reach a perfect curve? The letter “D” might work best with a partner. Continue making letter poses for the rest of the alphabet. Mix it up by adding background music, spelling whole words, or even names of family members. Namaste.

Circle Time Video About Friendships & Feelings 💞
Sing to the tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know It” with Caitie from Super Simple Songs! Get moving by clapping your hands and stomping your feet along with Caitie. Then, join Caroline and Sophie as they read the book “Old Friends, New Friends” by Cynthia Platt. This storytime is a helpful prompt to encourage kids to talk about their friendships, feelings, and games they like to play with others. Khan Kids App: Physical Development & Blending Sounds 🗣
Try the Logic+ and Reading lessons in Khan Academy Kids! Open the app and select the purple book icon to access the Library. Younger kids (ages 2-4) may enjoy the “Physical Development” section in the Logic+ tab. Older kids can progress by learning about words that start with “st” to enhance their reading skills. Time to Play: Sports Scavenger Hunt 🏓
Design a sports-themed scavenger hunt for little learners, then play ball with what you find! For families with multi-age kids, let the older kids create the hunt, while the younger ones seek and find. Ideas for scavenger hunt items include balls (soccer, tennis, basketball, inflatable), bats, jerseys, caps, goggles (swim or ski), racquet, net, skateboard, yoga mat, or golf tee. Use word recognition to check found items off of the list. Finished? Use this unique collection of items to invent a new Olympic sport!
WEDNESDAY
Circle Time Video: Learn New Dance Moves 🕺
On Circle Time, join Caroline and Sophie as they read the book “Eight Dance Moves” by Cynthia Platt. Then, take a dance class with our special guest, Teacher Crystal, as she demonstrates some hip hop dance moves. Learn head rolls, arm waves, arm swipes, and arm rolls. Time to Play: Family Dance Party 🎉
Put your letter D skills to work by decorating the house for a family dance party. Design invitations with the words “Dance Party”, put up signs like “So You Think You Can Dance?”, then dangle streamers in the living room. When the time comes, turn off the lights, turn on the flashlights, turn up the stereo, and bust a move. Distribute dance awards and don’t forget to include any talented dogs or dads.

Circle Time Video: Play Simon Says 👯♂️
On Circle Time with Khan Academy Kids, Caroline and Sophie read the book “Sandy Says” by Cynthia Platt. Join Sandy, Reya, and Ollo as they play a fun game together that kids can play too! Time to Play: Make Musical Instruments 🥁
Build your own battle of the bands by making an assortment of musical instruments. Kleenex boxes and rubber bands can make a fine guitar. Coffee cans and sticks can drum up quite a beat. Wooden spoons and kitchen colanders make a glorious gong. Or, harmonize with a harmonica made from a comb and a piece of paper. Don’t stop there. Try decorating these instruments with a new band name!

Time to Play: Build an Obstacle Course ⛳️
Jump up, climb through, and race to the finish line with a homegrown obstacle course. Perk up any competition with creative obstacles to keep it interesting. Cones (i.e., empty plastic plant containers turned upside down), jump ropes, hula hoops, mats, garden hoses, stepping stones, chalk, fabric, beams, and buckets can all add up to a brain-teasing test of physical dexterity. Practice writing skills by writing out the rules so everyone competes fairly.
Weekend Bonus: Stay Fit with Unicef Kid Power! 🏋🏾♂️
For those who’d like to practice for their obstacle course by getting fit, workout with Class Fit videos from Unicef Kid Power! Boost energy with their total body “achiever” exercise. Motivate to finish the repetitions, because hard work pays off! Unicef Kid Power is a free dance, yoga, and activity platform to help students feel energized and empowered.
