Monday: Instruments and Music

Continue music education with this episode of Marvelous Music on Catie’s Classroom. Caitie reviews some of her favorite musical instruments in the 20-minute show of sing-and-play-along fun! Aw, and look at these marvelous music flashcards from Super Simple.
Read: In Harmony
Jazz up today’s reading time with In Harmony by Cynthia Platt. See how Sandy helps her friends work together to start a new band. Find this title in the Books section of the Khan Kids Library which features Camp Khan Kids summer reading in the month of July.
Children who are just beginning to read can choose Read to Me, and those who would like to practice reading independently can try Read by Myself.
Write: Name the instruments
After reading the book In Harmony, color a picture of the Khan Academy Kids characters playing their instruments together. Find it in our printable packet, or at the top of the Create tab in the Khan Kids Library for the month of July. Then, practice writing the musical instrument names with today’s worksheet.
Are your kids curious about musical instruments? Check out Sandy’s entire instrument collection, here.
Learn: Phonics
Kids can make letter and word sounds with reading lessons in the Khan Kids app. Head to Reya’s Reading tab and adjust the learning level to your child’s age. Scroll through the lessons focused on letters, words, sounds, and syllables. While completing the lessons, encourage campers to be vocal in their learning and repeat the sounds they learn out loud. We also have Reya's lessons on our YouTube channel!
Play: Make your own instrument
Kids can build their own band by making an assortment of musical instruments out of recycled materials. For example, Kleenex boxes and rubber bands can make a fine guitar (like this one from Crayola).
💜 Note: When we play at Camp Khan Kids, we can be as flexible or creative as necessary. Do what works best for you. If you'd rather not make a guitar, try a coffee-can drum or a wooden spoon gong!
Image from our very first Camp Khan Kids!
Once the instruments are made, we'd love to see the creations. Tag us on social media with the hashtag #campkhankids or submit them to be included in our art show.
Tuesday: Singing and songwriting
Watch: Lyrical Learning with Crayola
Let’s continue Music & Movement week with marvelous melodies from Mr. Dwayne Reed, (America’s favorite rapping teacher) from our friends at Crayola Education. This colorfully upbeat music video sets a fun tone for summer learning. Can you sing along?
Read: Peck Plays a Tune
Read Peck Plays a Tune by Cynthia Platt in the Khan Academy Kids app. Explore different instruments with Peck, Sandy, and Ollo. Find this title in the Books section of the Khan Kids Library which features Camp Khan Kids summer reading in the month of July.
Write: Write a song
In today’s coloring page, Sandy is singing a tune. Can you think of lyrics to go along with the song? Turn the page over and use the blank side for writing words to the song. If you’re using the in-app coloring page, try using the pencil icon to access the microphone so kids can record and play back their vocals.
Learn: Patterns
Sound patterns in music can make up merry melodies. Learn more about patterns by going to the Math tab in the Khan Kids app. Once in the Math tab, set the learning level to Kindergarten, and scroll down to the Patterns & Shapes section. Sandy does a great job explaining how patterns work.
Play: Do house chores to music
Take a camp break to complete some household chores, like sweeping floors, putting toys away, or doing laundry. While doing the chores, turn up the music and dance a bit. The kids may love the energy and ambiance. Classic jazz or big band music can put smiles on every little helper’s face!

Read: The New Class
Kodi tries her first ballet class in the book The New Class by Cynthia Platt. Read and find out how Kodi feels as she tries these new moves. A new sport isn’t always easy, but with support and encouragement, progress is possible! Find this title in the Books section of the Khan Kids Library which features Camp Khan Kids summer reading in the month of July.
Write: Color a dance scene with Crayola
Color today’s coloring page in the Khan Kids app or printable packet, or venture out to the Crayola website to find more free coloring pages. We were delighted to discover this dance party scene for more coloring fun!
Learn: Words with the letter D
Practice tracing the letter D for Dance in the Khan Kids app today. If your child has already mastered the letter D, try lessons in the Khan Kids app that focus on the letter D for sounds and words. Ollo’s Letters tab in the Khan Kids Library is a great place to start.
Play: Ribbon wands for dancing
We’re inspired by this craft by our friends at Super Simple to liven up family dance parties. Try making ribbon wands for dancing today. These can be as simple as foot-long sticks or branches with fabric strips tied on the end, to more detailed decor. It’s up to you! Check out their example to get ideas and dance moves flowing. Dance videos are welcome, of course!
Thursday: Workout Day
Watch: Workout with Coach Kelli
Join Coach Kelli and friends as she leads a kid-friendly workout with jumps and lunges. Follow along and get strong as we start physical fitness day at Camp Khan Kids! This episode starts with a book about trains but soon turns into exercise fun at minute 14.
Read: Flip, Jump, Roll
Read the book Flip, Jump, Roll by Cynthia Platt in the Khan Academy Kids app. Practice learning cartwheels with Kodi and Reya. Find this title in the Books section of the Khan Kids Library which features Camp Khan Kids summer reading in the month of July.
Write: Plan a workout
Use the writing page in this week’s printable pack to plan or draw a workout. Encourage kids to be creative and write down physical activities that they enjoy doing. For example, Sandy and Reya like to include skateboarding in their daily workout!
Learn: Fast Slow High Low Yoga + Physical development activities
Energize campers with Fast Slow High Low Yoga from our friends at Alo Yoga. It's all about creative movement, plus a great opportunity to master the downward-facing dog pose.
Campers can do more movement activities in the Logic+ section of the app’s Library (preschool and kindergarten levels). Songs like “Go to the Zoo” and “Head Shoulders Knees and Toes” are great for physical movement.
Play: Make a medal
How about making medals to celebrate all of the physical activity kids did today? Medals are fun and easy to create. Cut paper or cardboard circles, decorate them with award-winning flair, and attach ribbon to hang on your athletes of honor. Here is a neat example from Crafts with Toddler on YouTube.
Friday: Sports and games
Watch: Olympic Circle Time
Join the Khan Academy Kids crew for a special episode about the Olympic spirit. Start by reading The Best by Cynthia Platt, and learn about the difference between being competitive and doing your personal best. Then, talk with Sophie about the Olympic Games, and watch her make an Olympic torch out of paper. Kids will love it when Sophie steps outside to do her own Olympic activities at home.
Read: Play Ball
Read the Book Play Ball by Cynthia Platt in the Khan Academy Kids app. Follow the story of five friends and how they collaborate to play a game that’s fun for everyone. Find this title in the Books section of the Khan Kids Library which features Camp Khan Kids summer reading in the month of July.
Write: Fill in your certificate for completing the week!
Time to celebrate! Invite campers to fill out their certificates for completing the week. Find the certificate in the printable packet. During the month of July, you can also find a digital version inside the app that campers can export and save. Consider sharing your certificate with a friend so they can join Camp Khan Kids too. All of our programs are available for free—for anyone, anywhere!
Learn: Peck’s number line
Scorekeepers play an important role in games and sports. Practice addition and subtraction lessons in the Khan Kids app to be a great scorekeeper. We especially love the lessons with Peck’s number line where you can count by moving Peck. To find these lessons, head to Peck’s Math tab in the Khan Kids app > 1st grade > Addition and Subtraction methods > Count On. Or, use the worksheet in this week's printable pack.
Play: Science: Why do balls bounce?
Many games and sports involve a type of ball, like baseball, basketball, soccer, and tennis. Let’s investigate how balls bounce for Science time today. Set up an experiment for kids involving a selection of balls from around your home. Which one is the bounciest? Ask kids for their theory about why a certain ball is bouncier. This video shows the experiment in action.
