Monday: Build
Watch: Build a Toy House on Circle Time
It’s time to ramp up our building skills during Arts & Crafts Week at Camp Khan Kids. First, listen to Caroline and Sophie as they read the book Ollo’s Toy House by Cynthia Platt. Kids can think about building their own toy house. What would it look like? Caroline has some ideas!
Read: The Treehouse
Brainstorming with others is a key part of the building process. Kids will find a great example of brainstorming in the book The Treehouse by Cynthia Platt. In the story, Kodi and her friends share ideas to build a very special treehouse together. Find this title in the Books section of the Khan Kids Library, which features Camp Khan Kids summer reading in the month of July.
Children who are just beginning to read can choose Read to Me, and readers who would like to practice reading independently can try Read by Myself.
Write: Draft a building plan
Look at the tower Kodi and friends climbed in today’s coloring page. Find it in our printable packet, or in the Create tab of the Khan Kids Library for the month of July. Let kids color the tower, then turn the page over to design a tower of their own.
Learn: Math and measurement
For learning time today, head to the Math tab of the Khan Kids app for lessons on math and measurement. Preschoolers and kindergarteners can compare shapes and sizes, and grade schoolers can practice lessons on length and units. Then, when kids are building during today's play activity, make measurement part of the fun by having a ruler or tape measure available.
Play: Tissue box house
Look around the house for an extra or empty tissue box. It’s the perfect square or rectangle for the base of a house. Encourage kids to turn this little box into a play home of their own. Cover it with paper and create designs for windows and doors. Fold a piece of paper into a tent for the roof. Let’s create a neighborhood together! Here are some tissue box gingerbread houses we found for inspiration.
Share your homes with us here to be included in the camp art show, or post them with #campkhankids on social media. We can't wait to see what you come up with!
❤️ Note: When we play at Camp Khan Kids, we can be as flexible or creative as necessary. Do what works best for you. If you don't have a tissue box, try using another type of box. Tall houses are cool too!
Tuesday: Imagine
Watch: Let Your Imagination Soar on Circle Time
Spark the imagination with Caroline and Sophie as they read the book Sidewalk Chalk by Cynthia Platt. Look at what Peck dreams up as he dives into imaginary play with an idea, some chalk, and his amazing friends. Thinking has no limits!
Read: Planetary Play
Read the Book Planetary Play by Cynthia Platt for storytime today. Find this title in the Books section of the Khan Kids Library which features Camp Khan Kids summer reading in the month of July. In the book, Reya uses her imagination to create and direct a play with the Khan Kids crew. Together they make a set, a storyline, and costumes. What a production!
Write: Create a play with Khan Kids characters
Have your kids ever written a play? A play is a story that characters act out on stage. Help campers write or narrate a story starring the Khan Academy Kids characters with today’s coloring page. Try using the pencil icon to open special features like changing the art tool, adding stickers, or recording a voice.
While younger learners color, older learners can use the writing page for writing practice.
Learn: Adjectives
Adjectives are words that describe people, places, or things. These creative descriptions help ideas come to life! Learn about adjectives with Reya in the Khan Kids app. She has introductory lessons in the Videos tab under 1st Grade Reading. Reya's videos are so cute—feel free to let kids explore.
If you’re looking for more adjective activities, older kids might like doing the Mad Lib with Reya in our printable packet.
Play: Put on a play or a puppet show
Put all of today’s activities together for a star-studded performance. Kids can run a rehearsal, set a stage, add some props, and act out their play. They can star in their own show or use paper bag puppets on a mini stage. Isn’t living room theater the best?

Wednesday: Celebrate
Watch: Piñata Party read aloud
Did you know that today is the 5th anniversary of the Khan Academy Kids app? Happy birthday Kodi and friends! We’re starting the celebration with piñatas. Listen to the story Piñata Party on Circle Time and see how Sandy and Ollo use a balloon, paper, and glue to make a piñata.
Read: Beach Day Birthday
Keep celebrating with Ollo and friends in the Khan Kids app. Open the story Beach Day Birthday to play along with the Khan Kids crew as they enjoy an epic day at the beach. Read to see what Sandy brings as a yummy birthday surprise!
Write: Make a Happy Birthday sign
Let’s celebrate by making signs for Kodi and friends. Color the Happy Birthday sign in the Khan Kids app or in our printable pack. How festive can kids make it? If kids are working in the app, they can add stickers or record a birthday song. If kids make a printed sign, add some bling and share with #campkhankids.
Learn: Punctuation
Here at Khan Academy Kids, we love birthday parties! And what’s a party without an exclamation point? Head to the Reading tab in the Khan Kids app to learn about punctuation. Find these lessons in the 1st-grade level under Sentence Types and Punctuation. Younger learners can go to their own age level to practice writing lines and shapes that make punctuation possible.
Play: Host a stuffed animal birthday party
It’s time to throw a party! Invite kids to gather up their stuffed animal friends for a pretend-play birthday party. Get creative with the party setting. The guest of honor can sit on a decorated chair. (For example, we love this upcycled chair from Crayola!) Share a photo of your party scene with #campkhankids. Together, we can make the world’s largest teddy bear picnic!

Thursday: Share with others
Watch: Thank You Cards with Kim
It’s the people in our lives that can help make celebrations special. Start Thursday with thoughtfulness toward others by watching this art tutorial from Kim at Khan Academy Kids. Kim shows kids how to create a thank you card with ideas on what to draw and color.
Read: So Different
For reading time, open the Khan Kids app to the book So Different by Cynthia Platt. Find this title in the Books section of the Khan Kids Library which features Camp Khan Kids summer reading in the month of July. We love how each friend appreciates the unique contributions of one another. Teamwork makes the dream work!
Write: Write a thank you card
In today’s Circle Time, Kim showed us how to make a thank you card. Use some of her ideas to draw, decorate, or write out a card for someone special using the template in our printable pack.
Learn: Friendships and relationships
There are many ways to learn how to be a helpful friend. Head to the Khan Academy Kids app and explore social-emotional development lessons that emphasize thoughtfulness toward others. You can find these lessons in the Kindergarten level of the Logic+ tab.
Play: Make a gift for someone special
Channel gratitude into gift-making for playtime today. Some of our favorite homemade gifts include kids artwork like these photo blossoms from Super Simple Crafts, friendship bracelets, or bookmarks. Bookmarks are easy and can be upcycled from old greeting cards, but these picture flowers are a hoot too!

Friday: Science: Mix it up
Watch: Make slime
Ready for some science experiments? Start by watching this Circle Time episode about making slime. Read along as the Khan Kids crew makes slime in the book So Slimy by Cynthia Platt, then see special guests make slime too. This is a great way to prepare kids for mixing up their own concoctions later!
Read: The Recipe
Some of the most interesting creations happen from mixing, measuring, and experimenting. Not everything turns out as you’d expect, but it will always turn into something new. Read about Kodi’s brownie experiment in the book The Recipe for today’s reading time. Kodi learned a lot, and Reya appreciated the surprise.
Write: Fill out your certificate for completing the week
Time to celebrate! Invite campers to fill out their certificates for completing the week. Find the certificate in the printable packet. During the month of July, you can also find a digital version inside the app that campers can export and save. Consider sharing your certificate with a friend so they can join Camp Khan Kids too. All of our programs are available for free—for anyone, anywhere!
Learn: Flexible thinking and following directions
Scientists must pay attention to details and directions to run their experiments safely. Let kids build their memory muscles by heading to the Logic+ tab in the Khan Kids app. There, they will find lessons for memory matching, flexible thinking, sorting objects, and following directions.
Play: Mix your own play dough
Now, it’s time for action. We found a fun and simple YouTube video about how to make your own play dough with flour, salt, and water. There’s also a recipe for homemade play dough on Good Housekeeping. Assemble ingredients in the kitchen today and see how your dough turns out. Feel free to modify the recipe. It’s an experiment, after all!
Curious about the science of dough? Read through this article from the Connecticut Science Center with your little learners. They’ll be amazed to learn that their homemade concoction was a lesson in chemical reactions!
